The World Cup (sports' biggest event) is being held in South Africa next year. Not sure, I want to hang out with the hordes of people that will be there, but South Africa is an amazingly beautiful country, fascinating cultures. It's the largest country in the Southern African region that comprises Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique and the tragic Zimbabwe.
For the last couple of decades, AIDS/HIV in Africa, especially in southern Africa has taken quite a toll on the modern societies of these nations. Grassroots Soccer has taken a role in educating young Africans about HIV prevention through soccer. Their ambitious goal is to put 1.25 million kids through their programs.
If you're a college student or recent grad, you can intern with them - "Peace Corps for Soccer." You can make a donation or host a barefoot soccer tournament. Interestingly, one of the founders of Grassroots Soccer is Ethan Zohn, a winner of CBS' "Survivor Africa" in 2002. Ethan was recently diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma, but is continuing to promote HIV Awareness as well as cancer research.
